Bio
Recruited from California Gully in the Bendigo Football League, Bill Jones was a second-generation footballer whose father had represented Williamstown in the pre-VFL era. He immediately found a place in the Richmond lineup for the opening round of 1911, utilised primarily as a ruckman or flanker who could drift between defence and attack. While he quickly established a reputation as a strong overhead mark, his inconsistent kicking often undermined his aerial dominance, a flaw that drew specific criticism during his two seasons at Punt Road. Unable to cement a regular spot in the senior side by the start of 1913, he crossed to Melbourne but failed to add to his VFL game tally, eventually moving on to Golden Square and North Melbourne in the VFA while pursuing a legal career off the field.
