Bio
Bill Hickey was a defender recruited from Wangaratta in the Ovens and Murray League who became a consistent figure for South Melbourne during the early 1900s. Operating primarily in the backline, he played 45 games for the Southerners, earning a reputation as a serviceable and steady option in defence. After a season out of the league, he joined Carlton in 1907, but arrived at Princes Park at a time when the Blues were the dominant force in the competition. With the club marching toward a second consecutive premiership, Hickey found opportunities scarce, managing only a single senior appearance in navy blue before his league career came to a close.
