A talented South Australian forward whose VFL career was a brief wartime cameo, Bill Hudson is remembered as one of the Saints' fallen soldiers from the Second World War. Originally a prolific goalkicker for West Adelaide in the SANFL, Hudson found his way to Junction Oval in 1942 after being transferred to Victoria with the Second Australian Imperial Force. He made an immediate impact on debut against North Melbourne, coming off the bench as the 19th man to boot three goals in a single quarter, showcasing the natural scoring instinct that had yielded over 100 goals in his home state. While his time in the red, white and black was limited to just five appearances before his deployment to the Pacific theatre, he proved himself a capable and dangerous forward option. Tragically, Hudson was killed in an accidental grenade explosion in New Guinea in 1945, cutting short a promising life and football journey at just 24 years of age.
