Bio
Arriving at Essendon with impressive credentials, Bill Johnson had already captained West Melbourne to its solitary VFA premiership in 1906. He established himself as a reliable half-back flanker, playing a key role in the Essendon lineup that reached the 1908 Grand Final, only to fall short against Carlton. Johnson then left the VFL to pursue football in Queensland, spending three seasons in the northern state before returning to Melbourne in 1912. In a twist of fate, he signed with his former Grand Final conquerors, Carlton, playing seven matches as a utility to close out his top-level career.
