Family

Bill Kinnear was a talented dual sportsman who squeezed a brief but notable VFL stint into a career defined by his versatility. Hailing from a strong sporting family in West Brunswick—his brother Joe played nearly 50 games for the Demons and his nephew Colin later coached the Swans—Kinnear arrived at Essendon after first making his mark on the cricket pitch. He represented Victoria in first-class cricket during the 1935/36 summer, opening the batting at the MCG, before trading the whites for the red and black sash later that year. Recruited from Brunswick, his time at Windy Hill was limited to just three senior appearances against North Melbourne, Carlton, and Collingwood in the middle of the 1936 season. While his football career did not reach the longevity of his brother's, his achievement of representing the state in cricket and playing League football places him in a unique bracket of all-round athletic achievers.
