Bio
A diminutive rover standing just 164cm, Bill Landy was a Geelong local whose brief VFL career is forever bound to the tragedy of the First World War. Born into the family that would later produce Olympic track legend John Landy, he broke into the senior side late in the 1915 season, making his debut against South Melbourne just weeks after enlisting in the army. Nicknamed "Plugger," he relied on pace and agility to evade larger opponents, booting a goal in his first match and playing his only other game the following week against Fitzroy. His football journey was cut short when he deployed with the 58th Battalion, and he was tragically killed in action at the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916, aged just 19, having made the ultimate sacrifice less than a year after his final appearance for the Pivotonians.
