Recruited from Charlton in the North Central Football League, Bill Linger arrived at the Junction Oval in 1953 and immediately established himself as a regular in the senior lineup. Playing primarily as a rover who could drift forward and hit the scoreboard, he missed very few matches during his stint with the Saints, featuring in 31 games across two seasons. His ability to contribute offensively was highlighted by a four-goal haul against South Melbourne in his debut year, providing a spark for a team that often found wins difficult to come by. Despite his consistency and promise as a goal-kicking small, Linger's VFL career was fleeting, and he departed St Kilda at the conclusion of the 1954 season.
