William "Bill" Lowrie was a sharp-shooting rover and forward pocket whose promising St Kilda career was heavily curtailed by World War I. Born in South Melbourne, he broke into the Saints' lineup in 1914 and immediately displayed a natural eye for the goals, but his momentum was halted when he enlisted in the AIF following the 1915 season. Rising to the rank of Sergeant with the 60th and 59th Battalions on the Western Front, Lowrie returned to the Junction Oval in 1919 to help a struggling side rebuild. He proved he had lost none of his goal sense during the conflict, notably booting a career-high four majors against Geelong in his final season. Retiring with an impressive strike rate of nearly a goal a game, Lowrie remains a respected figure in St Kilda history, representing the generation of footballers whose peak years were sacrificed for service abroad.
