Bio
Recruited from the local Richmond Imperials, Bill Luff was a foundational player who bridged the club's transition from the VFA to its inaugural VFL campaign in 1908. Standing a towering 191cm—exceptionally tall for the era—he operated as a lightly built half-back flanker, utilising his superior reach and aerial judgement to take contested intercept marks over smaller opponents. His form in that debut season was historically significant, as he became the first Richmond player to earn state selection, representing Victoria in the 1908 Jubilee Carnival. Luff remained a defensive fixture at Punt Road for three seasons before transferring to Prahran, though the family name endured in the league through his son, Bill Jr., who later topped the VFL goalkicking with Essendon.
