Bio
Recruited from Katamatite in the Murray Football League, Bill Lumsden arrived at St Kilda with a glowing reputation as a premier country footballer, having claimed the 1947 O'Dwyer Medal as the league's best and fairest player. A World War II veteran who had served with the RAAF, Lumsden was a diminutive operator standing just 169cm, a stature that restricted him to a small utility role at the elite level. He joined a struggling Saints outfit in 1948 during a period where the club aggressively trialled country talent to lift themselves from the bottom of the ladder. Lumsden managed 11 senior appearances across two seasons but was unable to impact the scoreboard, ultimately finding the transition from regional dominance to VFL consistency difficult before departing the club at the end of 1949.
