Teams

Born in Geraldton, Western Australia, Bill Manger came through the ranks at Essendon Juniors before breaking into the senior side as a mature-age recruit in 1925. Standing 185cm—a significant height for the era—he was a tall forward and follower who showed early promise by booting seven goals in his six appearances for the Bombers, a respectable return for a newcomer joining a team fresh off back-to-back premierships. Despite his ability to find the goals, Manger found it difficult to hold his spot in Essendon's powerful lineup and finished his debut season in the reserves. Seeking more regular senior football, he transferred to arch-rivals Carlton in 1926 but added just one more game to his tally before his VFL career concluded.
