Bio
Recruited from the amateur ranks at Collegians after attending Scotch College, Bill Maxwell was a mature-age recruit who made a brief cameo for Melbourne during the 1909 season. Stationed in attack for his short tenure, he played just two senior matches and booted his solitary VFL goal in his final appearance against Geelong. His football journey was ultimately overshadowed by his military service; Maxwell enlisted in the First World War and served as a lieutenant with the 38th Battalion. He was tragically killed in action during the First Battle of Passchendaele in 1917, joining the list of league footballers who made the ultimate sacrifice, and is commemorated at the Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium.
