Bio
A robust tall who bridged the VFA and VFL eras, Bill McCulloch established himself as a ruckman for Melbourne during the mid-1890s before featuring in the club's inaugural league season in 1897. His time with the Demons was fragmented by a period living in Broken Hill, eventually leading to a transfer to Collingwood just weeks into the 1901 season. At Victoria Park, McCulloch was utilised primarily as a half-forward, using his 180cm frame—significant for the era—to provide a contest in attack. His brief tenure with the Magpies was highlighted by an appearance in the 1901 Grand Final loss to Essendon. Well-regarded off the field as a local police constable, he later famously enlisted for World War I service despite being in his mid-40s.
