Bio
A decorated war veteran from Western Australia, Bill McGilvray arrived at Fitzroy in 1920 with a reputation forged as much on the battlefield as the football ground. Born in Geraldton and recruited from South Fremantle, he served with distinction in the 16th Battalion during World War I, where he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery. A solid, mature-bodied recruit standing 180cm, McGilvray slotted into the Maroons' lineup for two consistent seasons immediately following his service, offering a physical presence and leadership experience. While he could not help Fitzroy to a premiership during his short Victorian stint, his standing in the game was evidenced by his immediate impact upon returning to the West in 1922, where he was appointed captain of South Fremantle.
