Bio
A mature-age recruit who debuted at nearly 30 years of age, Bill McIlroy’s brief VFL career came during the final, struggling years of the University Football Club. Originally playing for the Public Service team, he spent time with the Essendon Association side in the VFA before obtaining a clearance to the Students in 1913. McIlroy was brought in to provide experienced cover for a depleted amateur list that was finding it increasingly difficult to compete against professional opposition. He managed just three senior appearances in the club's penultimate season before focusing on his off-field career, where he eventually rose to prominence as Victoria's Secretary of Lands.
