Bio
Born in Tokatoka, New Zealand, Bill Mearns was a mature-age recruit who arrived at St Kilda via VFA powerhouse Port Melbourne. He broke into the senior side midway through the 1910 season, making his debut as a 25-year-old against Essendon at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground. Although he managed to boot a goal during his short stint at the top level, Mearns played just three consecutive matches before losing his place in the side. He was unable to force his way back into the lineup and left the VFL after a solitary season, remaining a unique historical footnote as one of the few New Zealand-born players to feature in the league's early decades.
