Bio
A foundation player who bridged the gap between the VFA and the formation of the VFL, Bill Newton crossed over to St Kilda from Richmond midway through the 1896 season. He etched his name into the record books by taking the field in the Saints' historic inaugural league match against Collingwood at Victoria Park in Round 1, 1897. Newton retained his place in the side for the first three weeks of the competition, but his top-level career was fleeting; he did not feature again after Round 3, becoming one of many players rotated through the squad during a tumultuous winless season where the club struggled to find a stable best 22.
