Bio
Recruited as a mature-age prospect from Heidelberg, Bill Payne arrived at Brunswick Street at 25 years old and immediately established himself as a reliable component of the Fitzroy defence. He enjoyed a consistent debut season in 1909, playing 16 games and holding down a regular spot in a Maroons side that finished mid-table. Despite this promising start, Payne's VFL career was surprisingly brief; he managed just a solitary appearance in 1910 before departing the league. Often confused with his contemporary namesake—the triple-premiership Carlton star Billy Payne—Bill was a serviceable backman who offered a brief period of stability for Fitzroy before fading from the top level.
