Bio
William "Bill" Sharkey was a homegrown talent who graduated from the Carlton Juniors to represent the Blues during the VFL’s formative years. Promoted to the senior list in 1898, the season following the league's inception, he became a fixture in a struggling Carlton side that spent much of the era languishing near the bottom of the ladder. A resolute defender who famously never registered a goal in his 47 career games, Sharkey was often tasked with stemming the tide against superior opposition attacks, toiling manfully in the backline while the club sought to establish its competitive identity. He departed Princes Park after the 1901 season, concluding his service just years before the arrival of coach Jack Worrall would transform the team into a premiership powerhouse.
