Teams

Recruited from the Mallee town of Chillingollah via VFA club Yarraville, Bill Sherman was the youngest of three brothers to don the tricolours for Footscray. Joining the club five years after his older siblings Jack and Ted had debuted, Bill eventually had the opportunity to play alongside Ted during the 1931 and 1932 seasons, forming a rare sibling duo in the senior lineup. Standing 175cm, he was a small utility who typically operated as a flanker or forward pocket, offering versatility and effort but lacking the consistency required to become a week-to-week lock in the side. His career was played out against the backdrop of the Great Depression, a grim period for the club's supporters, and Sherman found himself battling on the fringes of selection throughout his three-year tenure. Unable to secure a permanent role, he drifted out of the league after the 1932 season, eventually returning to the VFA with Yarraville.
