Recruited from VFA powerhouse Coburg following their 1926 premiership triumph, Bill Speakman was a diminutive rover who remains one of the shortest players to ever represent Essendon. Standing at just 157cm, he relied on sharp pace and agility to navigate through contests and evade larger opponents at ground level. His VFL career was unfortunately cut short by a broken leg early in the 1929 season, restricting him to just 16 senior appearances. After recovering, Speakman moved to the country to play for Albury before eventually returning to Coburg, leaving behind a brief glimpse of a talented small man whose time at the top level was derailed by injury.
