Recruited from local side Thornbury CYMS in the post-war boom of 1947, Bill Stephen established himself as the heartbeat of the Fitzroy defence for over a decade. A nuggety and fearless back pocket, he was widely regarded as one of the finest small defenders of his era, combining elite reading of the play with deceptively strong overhead marking for his size. His consistency in the back half was remarkable; he rarely lowered his colours to an opponent, a trait that saw him represent Victoria 14 times and poll significantly well in the Brownlow Medal for a player in his position.

Stephen’s legacy at the Lions is immense, transcending his 162 games. He won the club's Best and Fairest twice and spent his final three playing seasons as captain-coach, the first of three separate coaching stints that would make him the longest-serving coach in Fitzroy history. Named in the back pocket of the Fitzroy Team of the Century, his devotion to the club was total—he famously penned the lyrics to the club’s theme song and remained a spiritual leader for the "Gorillas" and Lions long after his retirement.
