Bio
Recruited from Benalla in the Ovens and Murray League, Bill Sykes arrived at Fitzroy in 1969 and immediately settled into a role as a sturdy key defender. Often tasked with manning the opposition's full-forward, he relied on his discipline and strong marking to nullify scoring threats during a difficult era for the Lions. He proved to be a durable contributor, playing nearly every game across his three seasons at the Junction Oval, but the demands of VFL football eventually conflicted with his veterinary studies. Sykes retired from the top level at just 23 years of age to return to the country, where he enjoyed a decorated playing and coaching career in regional Victoria before eventually entering state parliament.
