Hailing from a farm near Smeaton, Bill Taylor was plying his trade for Golden Point in the Ballarat league when he caught the eye of Geelong recruiters during a representative charity match. Standing a formidable 188cm—tall for the era—Taylor moved to the Pivot City to balance VFL football with his training as a wool classer. A versatile big man capable of holding down a key position at either end or pinch-hitting in the ruck, he boasted a strong pair of hands and a penetrating kick. After breaking into the reigning premiers' lineup midway through the 1926 season, he proved an effective avenue to goal, booting 10 majors across eight appearances including a three-goal haul against Collingwood. Despite this promising cameo, his time at the top level was cut short by persistent ankle troubles and an abrupt removal from the club's training list, ending his VFL career after just a single winter.
