Bio
Recruited from Alexandra in country Victoria, Bill "Sherry" Thompson was a promising half-back flanker who broke into the Essendon senior side as a teenager. While he tasted success as a member of the Bombers' 1968 reserves premiership team, his VFL career was abruptly curtailed when he was called up for National Service in 1970, eventually serving a tour of duty in Vietnam. Upon his return to Australia, Thompson forged a distinguished career in the VFA, initially captaining Williamstown before crossing to Dandenong. It was there that he fully demonstrated the talent lost to the top flight, capping his resurgence by winning the Association's highest individual honour, the J.J. Liston Trophy, in 1977.
