A classic football journeyman whose brief VFL career was bookended by significant stints in the Association, Bill Thorpe was a goal-kicking forward who found his true footing away from the league spotlight. Originally recruited from Moorabbin, he managed two senior appearances for Richmond in 1914 before crossing to Footscray the following season. With the VFA in recess during the peak of the Great War, Thorpe resurfaced in the VFL with Fitzroy in 1918, adding five games to his tally as clubs scrambled to fill lists during the conflict's final year. While he struggled to command a permanent spot at the elite level, he established a stronger legacy in the VFA, most notably as a spearhead for Northcote in the early 1920s where he booted nearly 100 goals in just three seasons.
