Rising through the grades from the Richmond Fourths, Bill Walford was a tall key-position prospect who found his path to senior football blocked by the Tigers' emerging "Golden Era" lineup. Standing 191cm, Walford was a versatile tall capable of playing in defence or attack, but he spent the majority of his time at Punt Road dominating the lower grades. He was a central figure in the Tigers' 1966 Reserves premiership and topped the Reserves goalkicking the following year, proving himself too good for the seconds but unable to displace the stars in Tom Hafey's senior side. Seeking greater opportunity, he crossed to Fitzroy in 1968, where he was utilized primarily as a forward and booted 16 goals in 11 games. despite showing promise in front of goal for the Lions, his VFL career concluded after that single season, though he went on to enjoy a prolific tenure in the VFA with Sandringham and Dandenong.
