Bio
A mature-age recruit from VFA powerhouse Port Melbourne, Bill Walton arrived at Collingwood with a reputation as a tall, sturdy utility with a "heady" football brain. He made an immediate impact as a key position swingman, playing crucial roles at both ends of the ground across his two seasons at Victoria Park. Walton's brief VFL career was defined by high-stakes performances; he was named among the best afield at centre half-forward in the 1918 Grand Final loss, before switching to centre half-back to anchor the defence in the Magpies' 1919 premiership triumph. He left the club a premiership player, returning to the VFA where he later famously coached Hawthorn while still being forced to play against them for Port Melbourne due to a clearance dispute.
