Bio
Recruited from Brunswick Juniors, Billy Blackman's arrival at Princes Park was preceded by a harrowing stint in the First AIF, where he was wounded in action three separate times before returning to Australia in 1918. Standing just 170cm, the courageous small man overcame his war injuries to debut for Carlton in 1920, quickly proving himself tough enough for league football and earning selection for the VFL representative side against New South Wales in 1922. After five seasons with the Blues, he crossed to the VFA and became a standout for Brunswick, playing a starring role in their 1925 premiership triumph and later serving as club captain. His career remains a testament to resilience, transitioning from the trenches of France to the heights of Victorian football.
