Bio
Recruited from Ouyen Rovers in the Mallee region, Billy Blair was a dependable defender whose VFL career was largely dictated by his employment movements. After declining an earlier invitation to trial with Hawthorn, he relocated to Geelong for work and eventually earned his senior debut in Round 10, 1935, stepping into the backline to cover a spate of injuries at the club. He managed just two senior appearances for the Pivotonians before another job transfer took him to Melbourne the following year, where he played sub-district football for Fairfield despite interest from rival VFL clubs. While his time as a player was fleeting, Blair maintained a connection to the league by later returning as a VFL boundary umpire, officiating in 41 matches during the 1940s.
