Hailing from Jerilderie in the New South Wales Riverina, Billy Brownless became a cult hero at Geelong almost immediately after making his debut in 1986. A powerful key forward with a strong pair of hands and a booming kick, he spearheaded the Cats' attack during the high-scoring era of the late 1980s and 1990s. Brownless was central to Geelong's formidable offensive unit under Malcolm Blight, leading the club's goalkicking three times and earning a reputation as a big-game player. His most enduring on-field moment came in the 1994 Qualifying Final against Footscray, where he marked and goaled after the siren to secure a famous victory.

Despite his individual prowess, Brownless's career was marked by team heartbreak, playing in four losing Grand Final sides in 1989, 1992, 1994, and 1995. As the game evolved and injuries took their toll, he struggled to hold his spot in the senior side towards the end of his tenure, eventually retiring in 1997 just two games short of the 200 milestone. While often recognised today for his media personality, his contribution to Geelong as a contest-winning forward remains significant, having booted 441 goals during one of the club's most entertaining eras.
