Bio
Recruited from the Essendon Association, Billy Gent was a skilled rover whose goal-kicking ability was often overshadowed by his reputation as one of the VFL's most volatile enforcers. A combative player who thrived on physical intimidation, Gent's career was punctuated by severe disciplinary issues, most notably a massive 20-week suspension in 1904 for striking multiple Fitzroy opponents in a single game. His aggression came to a head again in 1907 when he was initially suspended for life for striking Carlton’s Dick Harris, a verdict that was sensationally overturned on a technicality because the report was lodged by a club official rather than the umpire. Gent managed just four more appearances after his reprieve before retiring, remembered primarily as a fiery hard man of the Bloods' early era.
