Bio
Selected by Hawthorn with pick 24 in the 2013 National Draft, Billy Hartung arrived with a reputation as an elite endurance athlete after breaking the draft combine's beep test record. Utilised primarily as an outside midfielder who could break lines with his running power, he became a regular contributor during a successful era for the Hawks but often faced scrutiny regarding his contested ball-winning ability. His tenure at Hawthorn was defined by a moment of personal misfortune in 2015 when, after playing 20 games including the Preliminary Final, he was omitted from the Grand Final side to accommodate a returning Jack Gunston. Despite featuring heavily in 2017, Hartung was delisted by the Hawks and subsequently drafted by North Melbourne, where he played 13 games in 2018 before a hamstring injury and inconsistent form led to his departure from the AFL system.
