Bio
Recruited from Beverley, Billy Irwin managed a brief tenure with Melbourne during the 1911 VFL season. A half-back who could also push forward to impact the scoreboard, he made his debut against Geelong at Corio Oval in Round 2 but struggled to cement a regular spot in the senior lineup. His only other appearance came later that year against Fitzroy, ending his league career with two games and a solitary goal to his name. While his time at the top level was fleeting, Irwin went on to lead a distinguished life of service, enlisting in the artillery during World War I before becoming a chaplain and later a respected schoolmaster at Trinity Grammar and St Peter's College.
