Bio
Recruited from local side East Geelong, Billy McCarter was a tenacious back pocket who became a defensive stalwart for the Pivotonians across two distinct eras. Making his debut in Round 1, 1913, he quickly established himself in the senior lineup before his career was significantly interrupted by the First World War. McCarter did not feature at VFL level between 1916 and 1920 due to his war service, a gap that cost him dozens of games during his prime physical years.
Remarkably, McCarter returned to the field in 1921 better than ever, playing his finest football well into his thirties. He was a key figure in stabilizing the Geelong defence during the club's resurgence, earning selection for Victoria on five occasions. His consistent form was recognised internally when he was named the club's Best and Fairest in 1923. He retired at the end of the 1924 season, narrowly missing out on Geelong's breakthrough premiership the following year, but leaving a legacy as a loyal and decorated servant of the club.
