Bio
Arriving from Christian Brothers College St Kilda, Billy Newing was a talented medical student who made a brief but sharp impact for the Students during the 1913 season. A forward with a knack for finding the sticks, he averaged a goal a game across his five senior VFL appearances and performed well enough to be awarded a prestigious "Half Blue" by the university. Like many of his teammates, Newing's football ambitions eventually took a backseat to academia and the Great War; he graduated in absentia while serving as a Captain in the Australian Army Medical Corps on the Western Front. Although his on-field career was cut short, he established a significant legacy off the field, returning from the war to become a distinguished physician and tuberculosis specialist at St Vincent’s Hospital for over forty years.
