Bio
A loyal servant of St Kilda during the transition from the VFA, Billy Shaw holds the distinction of being the club's inaugural VFL captain. Already a veteran with over 100 appearances in the association before the breakaway league was formed in 1897, the experienced wingman led the Saints during their brutally difficult induction into the major competition. Shaw’s career is defined by an unfortunate statistical anomaly; despite his standing as a foundation leader, he never played in a winning side at VFL level, enduring 29 consecutive defeats with St Kilda. After departing Junction Oval and missing the entire 1900 season, he was recruited by Melbourne for a brief cameo in 1901, but his sole game for the Redlegs also ended in defeat, capping off a respected but luckless tenure in the top flight.
