Bio
A foundational figure during North Melbourne’s elevation to the VFL, Billy Smith served as the club’s inaugural vice-captain for their debut season in 1925. Originally recruited from Essendon’s reserves (Essendon A), he established himself as a reliable half-back flanker in the VFA before making the step up to the elite level with the "Original Shinboners." His first VFL campaign was hampered by injury after a promising start, though he was recognised as a serviceable defender who provided crucial leadership for the league newcomers. Smith played just two games in 1926, famously drifting forward to snag the only goal of his career in his final senior appearance before departing the club.
