Bio
Recruited from the country town of Kerang, Billy Stewart was a solid defender who established himself as a reliable contributor for St Kilda during the early 1900s. Standing 178cm with a sturdy frame, he manned the backline with enough consistency to earn representative honours for Victoria at the 1908 Melbourne Carnival, where he was called up as an injury replacement. After five seasons and 46 games at the top level, Stewart departed the Saints to join Prahran in the VFA and later turned out for North Ballarat. His post-football life was marked by significant hardship during World War I, where he served his country and survived time as a prisoner of war in Germany before eventually returning to Australia.
