Bio
Bob Boyle arrived at Princes Park with a premiership pedigree, having previously tasted VFA success as a half-back flanker with North Melbourne's 1903 side. Upon joining the Blues, he was reinvented as a centreman, a role in which he became a key contributor during the club's 1904 campaign that ended in a Grand Final defeat. Despite his initial reliability, Boyle fell out of favour just as Carlton was entering its golden era, losing his place in the side after the opening round of the historic 1906 premiership season. He promptly retired to pursue umpiring, eventually officiating over 70 VFL matches and notably declining a boundary appointment for the 1916 Grand Final to umpire a country league decider instead.
