Bob Giles

A classy winger hailing from the club’s own backyard in Albert Park, Bob Giles was a highly skilled operator whose football career was consistently secondary to his professional life. Recruited from the local South Melbourne Districts, he immediately showed promise as an elegant mover with pinpoint kicking skills, establishing himself as a key linkman for the Swans. However, his tenure in the VFL was heavily interrupted by business commitments; he missed the entire 1951 season after accepting a transfer to Sweden with Electrolux, a rare move for a footballer in that era. Despite returning to become a regular fixture on the wing, Giles retired from senior football at just 25 to pursue a management role with Monsanto, though he remained at the Lake Oval as captain-coach of the reserves and later served as a dedicated official for the past players' association.
