Recruited from Broadford in country Victoria, Bob Hammond was a versatile key position player whose VFL career was defined by significant interruptions and eventual misfortune. The younger brother of Essendon’s Joe Hammond, he initially showed promise as a centre half-back for Hawthorn in 1927 before injury and a decision to return to the bush saw him exit the league for two full seasons. He resurfaced at Glenferrie Oval in 1931, reinventing himself as a centre half-forward who could hit the scoreboard, but he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the side. Seeking a fresh start, Hammond executed a mid-season clearance to St Kilda in 1933, but his tenure at the Junction Oval lasted just a single afternoon; he suffered a severe, career-ending knee injury in his debut game for the Saints, forcing him into premature retirement.
