Bio
Bob Hay was a Scottish-born scholar who found himself on the fringe of the most powerful team in the land at the turn of the century. The son of a Presbyterian cleric and a student at Ormond College, he entered the VFL system via Scotch College, joining Fitzroy just as the club was establishing a premiership dynasty. With the Maroons boasting a formidable roster that included some of the game's early greats, Hay found it virtually impossible to crack the senior lineup permanently, serving largely as depth during the club's golden era. His brief VFL career was secondary to his academic pursuits, and he retired after the 1901 season—coinciding with his university graduation—leaving the family's footballing legacy to his younger brother Johnny, who later played for Collingwood.
