Bio
Recruited from local side Kew, Bob Herbert began his VFL journey with Hawthorn during the tumultuous years of the Second World War but struggled to cement a regular senior spot at Glenferrie Oval. Seeking greater opportunity, he crossed to Melbourne in 1943 and immediately found his stride as a productive key forward for the Demons. Playing out of Punt Road due to the wartime requisition of the MCG, Herbert proved a dangerous scoring threat, famously booting a career-best bag of eight goals against Footscray late in his debut season with the club. He finished 1943 as Melbourne's second-leading goalkicker behind star full-forward Fred Fanning, serving as a reliable attacking foil during a period defined by unstable team lineups before concluding his league career at the end of 1944.
