Stats
Bio
Recruited from Melrose, Bob Mathews entered the VFL as a teenager and made an immediate impression for North Melbourne during a lean era for the club. He began his career as a forward, remarkably topping the Shinboners' goalkicking in his debut 1930 season with 29 goals despite being just 17 years old. As his career progressed at Arden Street, Mathews transformed into a defensive role, primarily operating as a reliable back pocket. He crossed to Essendon for the 1935 season but found opportunities limited at his new club, adding just two senior games in the red and black before departing to play for La Mascotte. Mathews later served in the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War.
