Bio
A mature-age recruit from West Melbourne, Bob Matlock broke into the South Melbourne side at 25 years of age and quickly became a fixture of their wartime defence. Playing as a reliable half-back flanker, he was known for his durability and was one of just five players to feature in every game of the club's 1945 campaign. That season culminated in the notorious "Bloodbath" Grand Final against Carlton, where Matlock manned the backline during one of the most physically brutal encounters in VFL history. Despite his consistency, his career was abruptly ended the following year when a severe knee injury sustained against Essendon in Round 2 forced him into premature retirement after just 35 games.
