Arriving at Brunswick Street via Port Melbourne and a stint in Sydney, Bob Merrick immediately established himself as one of the league's most potent full-forwards. He stamped his authority on the competition in his debut season by slamming home 12 goals in a single match against Melbourne, setting a club record that remains unbeaten a century later. Merrick topped Fitzroy's goalkicking for four consecutive years, but his career is largely defined by the heartbreak of the 1922 premiership campaign. Despite spearheading the Maroons' attack all season and finishing second in the league goalkicking, a severe knee injury late in the year ruled him out of the finals, forcing him to watch from the sidelines as his teammates raised the flag. He attempted a brief comeback in 1926, but further injuries curtailed the career of a prolific spearhead who was cruelly denied the ultimate success his form deserved.
