Bio
Recruited from Mortlake, Bob Russell was a promising ruckman who initially made his mark in Melbourne's junior ranks. He was a standout performer for the Under-19s, winning the Best and Fairest award during their 1964 premiership campaign before briefly stepping away from the club. Returning in 1966 to press for senior selection, he was immediately handed the number 34 guernsey and debuted in Round 1 against St Kilda at the MCG. Russell held his spot for the following week's clash with Hawthorn, but his career was cut short by a severe nose infection that required surgery. Although the club initially hoped he would only miss a month, the ailment effectively ended his brief tenure at VFL level.
