A local product recruited from the Fitzroy Sub-Districts, Bob Sayers was a winger whose short stint at the top level was marred by untimely injuries. His senior debut against Richmond in 1938 was initially delayed by fitness concerns, and when he finally took the field, he was struck down again during the third quarter and immediately lost his spot in the side. Sayers managed just three appearances in his debut season and added only one more in 1939, coming on as the 19th man to replace a teammate with a broken hand. Unable to secure a permanent place in the Lions' lineup, he was cleared to East Brunswick in the sub-district league midway through the season.
