Bio
Recruited from the Melbourne Teacher's College, Bob Smith was a tall utility who carved out a respectable career with Fitzroy but fell victim to a tantalising case of bad timing. After establishing himself as a regular fixture in the side from 1901 to 1903, his teaching profession forced a hiatus during the 1904 and 1905 seasons, causing him to miss the club's historic back-to-back premiership triumphs entirely. He returned to Brunswick Street in 1906 and immediately regained his spot at half-forward, featuring in that year's Grand Final loss to Carlton, but ultimately retired in 1909 without the premiership success that defined his era.
